Following a recommendation in the Guardian’s Readers Restaurants column ‘Italian Restarurants in the Midlands’ piece, I thought I ought to make the journey out to Clent to try this place. The evening didn’t start out well as my spouse is firmly of the opinion that if you can’t walk to the restaurant, why bother going? In the end I managed to persuade her to hop in the family car and I’m rather glad I did.

The restaurant is down at the end of the main Clent path, which has to be a good start. Inside it’s pretty old school Italian restaurant with much wood and not a trace of chrome or marble. The staff all appear to be long standing features and clearly knew many of their customers, which I have to say I like in a restaraurant.
The great strength of the menu was a fine selection of fresh fish, as well as many other pleasant Italian restaurant staples. However the chef is clearly not bound by convention as it was not a simple list of the usual suspects.

For starters we had king prawns with cajun spice (a fairly broad definition of Italian) and home made chutney. These were excellently cooked with a generous five giant prawns shell off. Our other starter was of two very large scallops with black pudding and Italian mushrooms. Perfectly pleasant. However the best was yet to come.

We had been offered brill, lemon sole, dover sole, cod, turbot and sea bass as fresh options. All grilled with a little flour and seasoning (plus rosemary for the sea bass, which may have been fried). I opted for the brill and my companion went for the dover sole. These arrived at the table with something of a flourish. Both were whole and on a serving platter. When asked for on or off the bone we both opted for off and were treated to a display of expert filleting which resulted in both fish beautifully arranged on our plates with scarcely a bone left while still both warm and succulent. The flavour of both was superb, both clearly fresh and cooked to perfection. Wow. Sadly the accompanying mixed veg was very non descript being al dente cauliflour, peas with pickled onions, carrots and some slightly flavoured potatoes.

Both very full at this stage we opted to skip pudding. I had a cappucino which was of a good standard.

For wine we had a pleasant pino grigio, which was the most expensive of the three pinos they do and was still only £18 or so. Apparently the house wine is very acceptable and is £12 for a litre, though I haven’t tried it myself.

My husband and I have been to The Four Stones several times now, and each time we have thoroughly enjoyed it. Not only do they do a good Italian menu being primarily an Italian restaurant, but they also have wonderful fish dishes and steaks on their menu. The halibut, which I always eat, is the best of anywhere I know! The atmosphere and service is second to none and nothing is too much trouble for the staff - they all endeavour to make your evening enjoyable and special. I couldn’t praise the restaurant enough and we are people that eat out on a regular basis - mainly because I am a terrible cook! We have brought friends to the restaurant also and will continue to do so as everyone we bring with us, agree with our opinion. Thank you to everyone at the Four Stones. Best wishes Lynn Cullimore.

You don’t have to worry when booking a meal at the Four Stones. The food is always consistently good with excellent wine to match. If it is Sunday lunch or an extra special meal, you will not be disappointed. We have been using the restaurant for years and have not had a bad meal yet. The atmosphere is friendly and attentive. Well worth a visit.

A good friend recommended this restaurant to me. Three of us received a warm welcome and the real fire in the reception lounge set a relaxed atmosphere in keeping with quality decor. An allergy to onions was no problem as the chef came out to describe how he would produce substitute sauces to go with our meal choices. We ordered meat, fish and some Italian food - all freshly cooked and tasty. Our order arrived in good time and the service was attentive, fast and efficient. Don’t expect harvester prices, but do expect good value and an enjoyable experience. When leaving, the ladies were charmed by a kiss on the hand from our host. We shall visit Four Stones again.
